About the Yampa-White-Green basin

The Yampa-White-Green basin is Division 6 of Colorado's seven water divisions. It takes in the Yampa, White and Green river basins and the North Platte, and its Division Engineer's office and water court sit in Steamboat Springs. BasinMind follows conditions here at Steamboat Springs, Craig, Meeker and Walden.

The division is split into 8 water districts, the units water commissioners administer day to day. The first two digits of a structure's WDID are its district (What is a WDID?).

  • 43 White River Basin
  • 44 Lower Yampa River
  • 47 North Platte River Basin
  • 54 Slater/Timberlake Creeks
  • 55 Little Snake River
  • 56 Green River Basin
  • 57 Middle Yampa River
  • 58 Upper Yampa River

BasinMind follows 4 reservoirs in the division, with the capacity it records for each: Stagecoach Reservoir (36,461 acre-feet), Elkhead Reservoir (25,550 acre-feet), Yamcolo Reservoir (9,621 acre-feet) and Steamboat Lake (26,364 acre-feet). The largest is Stagecoach Reservoir; daily storage comes from Colorado DWR telemetry or Reclamation.

The Yampa, White and Green belong to the Colorado River system, shared by seven states under the Colorado River Compact (1922); the North Platte, in North Park, flows instead to the Missouri. More in The Colorado River Compact.

Water planning here runs through the Yampa/White/Green Basin Roundtable and North Platte Basin Roundtable of the Colorado Water Conservation Board.

Each figure above carries the time its source stamped it. Percent of median compares today's flow with the median for this date over the gauge's record (cfs and acre-feet); a call shows how far down the priority list rights are being served on a stretch of river (What is a water call?).
